A striking mid-century modernist style painting of a still life interior setting, executed in oil onto board and dated 1954.

The composition presents a table scene with objects that include a jug and an artist’s palette, laid upon a green tablecloth.

Rendered in a distinctly modernist style and leaning towards abstraction, the artist as simplified the various forms into blocks of contrasting colours – focuses on the interaction of shapes and colour as opposed to realistic details. There is an emphasis on flat planes and distorted perspectives, creating a dynamic and somewhat cubist feel.

The palette is earthy yet muted, featuring browns, greens, greys, and touches of purple. These colours are balanced with areas of light, creamy white, which lend the piece a sense of contrast and depth.

The brushwork is expressive, with visible strokes that are broad and sweeping, adding a sense of movement and energy.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary cream frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
