A brilliantly executed and charming surrealist still life composition, executed in tempera on board and dated 1975, by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.
The composition features a golden-brown pitcher placed centrally on a white cloth, flanked by a whole pear, a sliced pear revealing seeds and subtle gradients, and a tight cluster of purple grapes. A single green leaf adds a note of dynamism, curving gently toward the top of the board.
Inviting viewers to revel in the simple beauty of everyday objects, the artist masterfully captures the essence of each form through his meticulous brushwork and keen attention to detail, as well as by simplifying the objects into bold, flat shapes.
The palette is earthy yet vibrant: greens, deep purples, and rich browns dominate, balanced by creamy whites and subtle touches of mustard and blue-grey in the patterned background. This controlled colour harmony enhances the work’s visual cohesion and vintage charm.
The brushwork is smooth and deliberate, with an even application of paint. The artist has prioritised form and contour over painterly expression, lending the work a clean, almost printed quality.
