Cosy Interior

A lively and expressive interior scene composition, executed in oil onto canvas by Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004), whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

The composition depicts a lively and homely decorated domestic setting. The room features a figure seated on a red sofa, a patterned ceiling, a table on a green carpet, and a black wood-burning stove to the right. The walls are adorned with framed paintings.

Containing elements of fauvism and expressionism, this striking painting emphasises rich colours, decorative pattern, and an illustrative quality.

A dynamic palette of reds, deep greens, yellows, and crisp whites creates contrast and depth. The patterned ceiling and surrounding elements introduce a mosaic of warm and cool hues, enhancing the lively ambiance of the room.

Thick, dabbed brushstrokes define the painting’s tactile, layered surface. The application of paint is textured and gestural, giving the scene a sense of movement and character. This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wide-profiled gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor scuffing.
