A wonderfully expressive and characterful sculpture by contemporary British artist Shirley Sharp, depicting a rather endearing face with exaggerated features and a gentle, almost knowing smile.

With its prominent nose, softly closed eyes, full lips and slightly tilted head, this little character has a lovely sense of personality. There’s something both humorous and tender about the expression. Is it a contented smile, a moment of quiet reflection, or perhaps a little private amusement? We love that it’s difficult to say for certain.

The sculpture’s beautifully rugged surface is just as appealing as its expression. Layers of earthy creams, soft greens, muted pinks and touches of terracotta bring warmth and depth to the face, while the rough, hand-worked textures give it a wonderfully tactile, almost weathered appearance.

Shirley’s sculptures explore human behaviour, emotions and the curious ways we connect with one another. Inspired by years of sketching people in everyday settings, she deliberately exaggerates features and leaves marks in her work to give her characters a sense of having lived a life. Rather than assigning them particular identities, she sees them as a little bit of all of us, inviting viewers to find their own stories in each piece.

There’s something particularly lovely about having a sculpted face like this in a room. Its expression and personality seem to shift depending on the angle and the light, making it a piece you’ll find yourself looking at again and again.
