Fields in Full Colour

A vibrant mid-century abstract landscape in which the countryside has been distilled into a rhythmic arrangement of colour, shape and texture, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1971.

The composition suggests a sweeping view across rolling fields and distant hills, with the landscape unfolding in overlapping horizontal bands. Rather than describing the scenery literally, the artist has simplified the terrain into loosely defined patches of colour, giving the work a wonderfully expressive, almost patchwork-like quality. A large blue-grey hill anchors the distance beneath a softly painted sky, while the foreground is alive with shifting fields and vegetation.

The palette is particularly joyful, combining coral pink, tangerine orange, mustard yellow, apple and sage green, turquoise and powder blue, balanced by softer passages of dusty mauve, grey and cream. The colours feel sun-warmed and harmonious, lending the landscape an uplifting quality without becoming overly bright.

Paint has been applied with broad, spontaneous and gestural brushstrokes, with areas of the canvas deliberately left visible between forms. The dry, scumbled application creates a lovely textural quality, while the irregular edges of each colour field retain a sense of movement and immediacy. There is a distinctly modernist approach to abstraction, where colour and form take precedence over conventional perspective and detail.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim wood frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
