In Her Own World

An evocative figurative painting depicting a solitary figure seen from behind and seated before an abstracted interior or window-like setting, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1984.

The figure occupies the lower centre of the composition, their dark, rounded hair and softly rendered skin tones contrasted against an expansive field of pale blue. With the sitter turned away from the viewer, the work has a wonderfully introspective quality, suggesting a private moment of stillness or contemplation.

The painting has a distinctly modernist sensibility, reducing both figure and surroundings to simplified shapes and broad planes of colour. Rather than describing the setting literally, the artist allows loosely defined blocks, stripes and fragmented forms to suggest an interior space. To the right, a vertical passage of turquoise and green introduces an almost window-like element, while small geometric details and bands of colour lend the composition an appealing abstract quality.

The palette is particularly fresh and harmonious, built around powder blue, soft aqua, turquoise, sage and mint green, balanced by creamy off-white and a deep charcoal-blue. Small touches of buttery yellow, coral pink and brighter teal provide playful accents without disturbing the painting’s overall sense of calm.

Paint has been applied with loose, expressive and deliberately visible brushwork. Broad, scumbled passages allow layers beneath to subtly emerge, creating a beautifully textured, chalky surface. The figure itself is only lightly articulated, with softened edges and minimal detail, while the surrounding areas shift between sweeping strokes, dry-brushed marks and more geometric passages of colour. This combination of figuration and abstraction gives the work an appealingly spontaneous character.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim gilt frame.There are some light surface marks and areas of water marking present, consistent with the age of the work; however, these do not detract from the overall appearance of the painting.
