The Green Gate

Painted in a distinctly modernist, semi-abstract style, the artist simplifies the architectural elements and surrounding foliage into expressive blocks of colour and loosely defined shapes. The strong geometry of the gate and pillars contrasts beautifully with the softer, more organic forms of the nature above.

The palette combines chalky whites, forest and olive greens, yellow, earthy terracotta and muted brown, with touches of dusty pink and mauve. The deep green gate provides a strong visual anchor, while the varied greens and warmer tones suggest abundant foliage catching the light.

The paint has been applied with a wonderfully tactile and expressive hand. Broad, directional brushstrokes and generous passages of impasto build up the foliage, creating a richly textured surface, while looser, thinner strokes define the architecture and foreground. This contrast in handling gives the work a lively, spontaneous quality.
