Vikings

This 1972 textile artwork is a bold and richly stylised handwoven tapestry depicting a Viking ship — a motif that beautifully blends Scandinavian heritage with the modernist textile aesthetic of the 1970s.

The central form of the ship is simplified into sweeping, geometric curves: a strong, arching hull rendered in earthy greens and blues, with a rhythmic row of circular shields in warm ochres, oranges, and reds adorning its side. Above, a stylised sail unfurls, composed of vivid stripes in red, orange, and gold against a cream field, framed by a band of deep blue that mirrors the sea below. This vintage tapestry remains in very good condition. It is mounted onto fabric lined board, and is ready to hang. The needlepoint is very slightly irregular, which is typical for handmade or traditionally textile pieces, adding to its authenticity and charm.
