Winter Tides

A captivating mid-century miniature abstract painting composed through a rhythmic arrangement of bold, gestural forms, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition is entirely abstract, with broad passages of colour layered and interlocked across the canvas. Sweeping shapes in deep navy and near-black provide a strong graphic structure, while softer expanses of sea green, teal, pale blue and cool white bring lightness and movement. Small touches of olive and ochre punctuate the otherwise cool palette, adding subtle warmth.

Executed in an Abstract Expressionist style, the painting has a wonderfully spontaneous quality. The artist has worked confidently with thick, expressive strokes, allowing the texture and direction of each brushstroke to remain visible. Areas of generous impasto sit alongside exposed canvas, giving the work a sense of immediacy and creating an appealing contrast between densely worked passages and open space.

The restrained palette and sweeping horizontal forms have an almost elemental quality, loosely evoking water, shifting landscapes or a rugged coastline, while remaining deliberately open to interpretation.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim silver-toned frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
