Where the Pines Meet the Sky

SOLD

An engaging mid-century modernist landscape painting that  presents a stylised vision of a woodland scene, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1952.

The composition captures a cluster of tall trees rising, their trunks rendered in rich brown and their foliage broken into angular planes of green. In the foreground, a pool reflects the muted light, grounding the scene in nature while balancing the composition with a patch of cool grey-blue.

The work leans towards a Cubist-inspired style, with the trees and leaves simplified into overlapping geometric forms. Rather than striving for naturalistic detail, the artist conveys rhythm and structure, capturing the essence of the forest through abstraction.

The colour palette is earthy yet vibrant, dominated by greens in multiple shades – deep pine, moss, olive, and emerald – contrasted by soft blues and greys of the sky. The brushstrokes are bold and deliberate, laid down in flat planes that build a sense of volume and depth without blending.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame. The canvas is slightly loose but this is not visible when hung  on the wall. There is a slight indentation to the right side, probably from the previous frame. The frame has some scuffing.
