An outstanding mid century modernist composition in oil, painted onto board.

The composition presents a bustling village scene where a group of female figures in the foreground are surrounding some tents, presumably shopping for fresh produce. In the background, we can see a facade of buildings in the village.

The artist has reduced the scene down to its formal qualities, focusing on shape, line, pattern and colour. A very rich and wide spectrum of colours have been used, and the contrasting shades that have been layered upon one another harmonise wonderfully together. The silhouettes of the figures and village scape have been outlined in varying shades of blue – highlighting the three-dimensional qualities of their form whilst adding interest to the painting. Expressive and energetic brushstrokes have been thoughtfully applied and dabbed across the surface, leaving a beautiful textural quality.

It almost appears that artist has painted this brilliant composition with a fisheye perspective as the scene is displayed with a wider viewing angle and slight curvature.

This oil on board is housed in a wooden frame with a linen border and silver detail. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
