A large and brilliantly executed mid century modernist figure scene, painted in oil onto canvas by the established female artist Brita Hansson (1918-1979).

In this vivid and richly coloured composition, we see a group of figures gathered together, with one figure holding a baby. Beneath them are baskets on the floor. The artist’s free and imaginative use of colour is evident, beautifully capturing the sense that the artists are standing out in the hot sun in colourful dress.  The background is a grid like composition painted in orange, red and sandy brown tones, evoking a sense of arid plains heated under the sun. There is a palpable sense of familiarity between the figures, as they gather together in casual conversation. Using a combination of bold black outlines and planes of juxtaposing colours, the artist has achieved great depth and complexity to the composition, while maintaining a sense of playfulness and freedom within her palette.

The painting is beautifully housed in a lightly painted wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
