A serene depiction of the historic Via Appia, one of Rome’s most storied ancient roads, painted by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

A towering tree with deep green foliage stands prominently in the foreground, casting dappled shadows across the ground. Scattered stone ruins, softened by time and framed by distant cypress trees, dot the rolling landscape, guiding the viewer’s gaze along the gently curving path.

Executed in a semi-abstract modernist style, the painting simplifies forms into bold, geometric shapes while maintaining an organic flow. The palette is a harmonious blend of soft blues, yellow, earthy greens, and muted beiges, evoking a soothing atmosphere.  Confident yet expressive brushstrokes lend texture and depth, creating a sense of both stillness and quiet movement.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very minor scuffing.
