Verdant Passage

An energetic and gestural abstract landscape, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 2015 by post-war Swedish artist Bo Swenson (1932–2022), whose artworks have been displayed in major public collections including the Swedish National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

The artwork evokes the sensation of moving through a lush woodland rather than depicting it literally. Broad vertical forms suggest tree trunks, while sweeping fields of green hint at dense foliage, filtered light and the layered depth of a forest interior. The composition balances recognisable natural references with expressive abstraction, inviting viewers to complete the landscape through memory and imagination.

Executed in a distinctly gestural, modernist style, the painting favours spontaneity and movement over precise representation. Confident, oversized brushstrokes overlap freely, creating a lively interplay between solid forms and open passages of exposed canvas. Vertical black marks establish a rhythmic structure, while loosely applied green shapes soften the composition. The result is both dynamic and contemplative, capturing the atmosphere of nature through gesture rather than detail.

The palette is refreshingly vibrant, dominated by varying shades of rich greens. These are balanced with creamy ivory, warm buttery yellows and deep charcoal accents, producing striking contrasts that simultaneously convey freshness, light and shadow. The restrained colour selection allows subtle tonal shifts to create depth while maintaining an overall sense of harmony.

Brushwork is bold, immediate and highly expressive. Thick, loaded strokes sit alongside dry-brushed passages, adding texture to the surface. Sweeping arcs, broad painterly blocks and quick linear gestures overlap in an intuitive rhythm, while occasional exposed areas of ground provide breathing space within the composition. The visible hand of the artist imbues the painting with a sense of energy and confidence, making it highly engaging.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim silver frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
