Under the Sea

This 1970 textile artwork is a playful and colourful handwoven tapestry that encapsulates the cheerful modernism of Scandinavian design from the era.

At its centre swims a stylised fish, depicted in bold geometric forms and bright hues of orange, yellow, lilac, and coral pink. Its body is segmented with rhythmic stripes, and a round blue eye pops vividly against its pale face. The fish’s form, while simplified, conveys a lively personality — it seems almost animated as it glides across the composition.

Surrounding it is a softly variegated blue background suggesting water, with hints of movement rendered through gentle tonal shifts. Black, linear motifs rise vertically on either side, resembling underwater plants or reeds, grounding the fish within its aquatic world. Above, a few horizontal yellow dashes evoke the glimmer of sunlight filtering through the surface.

Mounted neatly on a light linen backing, the piece balances playfulness with craftsmanship. The artist’s use of strong contrast, simplified forms, and tactile weaving brings warmth and charm to a simple subject.

This vintage tapestry remains in very good condition. It is mounted onto fabric lined board, and is ready to hang. The needlepoint is very slightly irregular, which is typical for handmade or traditionally textile pieces, adding to its authenticity and charm.
