A tranquil and ethereal mid-century cityscape that beautifully captures the quiet movement of daily life in Montmartre in France, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition captures a Parisian scene with the iconic domes of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica enveloped in a misty, dreamlike atmosphere. In the foreground, abstracted figures are strolling on a reflective path surrounded by lush greenery, their dark silhouettes providing a striking contrast to the luminous backdrop. A thin black tree branch frames the left side of the foreground, adding depth and structure to the scene.

There is a striking interplay of colours – as the background glows with a warm golden yellow, fading into soft pastel hues of peach, pink, and lavender, lending the impression of dawn or dusk light. In contrast, the deep greens in the lower half of the painting anchor the composition, representing the grass and walkways with expressive, painterly strokes.

The brushwork is fluid yet intentional, blending soft gradients with bold strokes to create movement and light.  Using thin, precise outlines, the subtle contouring around the silhouette of the basilica enhances its architectural shape while maintaining an ethereal, dreamlike quality.

Furthermore, by deliberately leaving areas of the canvas unoccupied, the artist has skilfully utilised negative space to draw attention to the boundaries between each element.

This oil on canvas is housed in complementary wood frame with an inner linen lining. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
