The Striped Room

The composition presents two sculptural black vessels arranged before a window. Through the window behind them, a small red and green landscape appear, adding a quiet narrative element that contrasts with the graphic interior setting. Orup’s modernist approach reduces objects to strong geometric silhouettes and carefully balanced shapes. The palette is vivid yet controlled: deep black vessels anchor the composition against bright sunflower yellow, warm reds, fresh greens and cool greys. Brushstrokes are deliberate and confident, with smooth, flat planes of colour and subtle texture that emphasise clarity, structure and design.

The result is a playful yet sophisticated still life that merges interior, landscape and abstraction which are hallmarks of Orup’s distinctive mid-century visual language.

This oil on board is presented in a warm gilt wooden frame with an inner border, which beautifully complements the painting’s bold palette. The painting has some light craquelure present to its paint surface, but it is very stable and consistent with the age of the work, and does not detract from the overall visual appeal.
