The Matador’s Pause

An emotive mid-century oil painting that captures a fleeting moment within the drama of the bullring, by the established Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum, and Jönköping Museum.

A matador stands poised before a powerful black bull, his red cape sweeping across the arena floor. Beyond the central encounter, spectators and figures dissolve into soft, indistinct forms, reinforcing the sense of movement, tension, and spectacle.

Executed in a painterly modernist style, the composition is pared back to its essential elements. Rather than focusing on precise detail, the artist conveys atmosphere and emotion through simplified forms, bold colour relationships, and confident gestural mark-making. The scene feels both immediate and timeless, balancing the intensity of the confrontation with an almost dreamlike sense of distance.

The palette is warm and sun-drenched, dominated by golden yellows, sandy ochres, muted taupes, and flashes of vivid crimson. The deep black of the bull provides a dramatic counterpoint to the brightness of the arena, while subtle touches of cream, peach, and grey soften the background and create depth.

Brushwork is loose and expressive throughout. Broad, visible strokes build the arena and sky, while quick, energetic applications of paint define the figures and movement of the cape. Areas of impasto add texture and vitality to the surface, allowing the painting’s physicality to contribute to its sense of drama and spontaneity.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary champagne toned wood frame with an inner linen lining. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
