Quayside Conversation

SOLD

A charming and serene mid-century modernist harbour scene by a coastal town, executed in oil onto board and dated 1956.

A green-and-white boat is moored at the dock, its hull mirrored faintly in the still blue water. On the quay, simplified figures in deep navy and green tones gesture in conversation, adding life and scale to the softly geometric buildings behind them.

The composition favours broad planes of colour over detail, with architectural blocks rendered in blues, muted greens, and subdued browns. The artist has used confident, deliberate brushstrokes and a restrained palette to evoke a hazy coastal morning. There is a dreamlike quality in the diffused light and softened outlines.

This oil on board is housed in a very well suited cream frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some paint loss.
