A charming and engaging contemporary animal composition that features a stylised tamworth pig captured in confident profile against a minimalist, tricolour backdrop, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The subject – a chocolate-brown pig – stands upright with a subtle sense of pride and whimsy. Its curled tail, erect ears, and single pale blue eye lend it character. The landscape background is rendered in vertical blocks of yellow, muted mauve, and slate that elevates the animal’s presence.

Painted in flat, even layers, the brushstrokes are nearly invisible, emphasising clean lines and bold forms over textural complexity. The restrained palette and graphic execution give the work a timeless, emblematic quality – at once playful and dignified.

This oil on board is housed in bold and striking green frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
