Rendered in a simplified yet bold form, the ram stands confidently against an undulating landscape of golden-yellow dunes. The ram’s dark, voluminous body is almost cloud-like, contrasting dramatically with the pale grey sky and ochre hills behind it.
Executed in a flat, graphic style reminiscent of folk art and naïve modernism, the painting uses a muted yet rich colour palette – matte black, warm browns, soft greys, and luminous yellow. The brushstrokes are smooth and controlled, with minimal texture, allowing the clean contours and deliberate forms to dominate. Subtle gradations in the sky and background create depth while maintaining the work’s minimalist charm.
This oil on board is housed in unique green frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.
British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
