A soothing and atmospheric nature landscape composition, executed in oil onto board and dated 1957.

The composition depicts an expansive nature scene, with a river flowing through rolling hills, and with a view of mountains in the distance.

Working with a modernist ethos, the artist has skilfully deconstructed the composition into layered planes of contrasting colours. Intentionally choosing not to focus on realistic details, he instead explores the use of colours, brushstrokes, and form to create a sense of depth and space.

The use of broad, expressive brushstrokes give a sense of texture and movement.

The colour palette is dominated by muted, earthy tones. Shades of green dominate the hills and foliage, balanced by greys and blues in the mountains and sky. The restrained use of white and light tones in the water provides a central focus, breaking the darker tones of the landscape. Overall, the colours convey a calm and atmospheric quality.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very minor scuffs.
