Little Red Houses

A small and charming naïve style mid-century landscape painting, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition depicts a settlement where cluster of red-painted timber houses are scattered across a gently undulating countryside. A winding road draws the eye through the composition, where two small figures – one walking and another riding a bicycle – introduce a delightful sense of everyday life and movement. Beyond, a pale blue waterway winds towards softly rolling hills, giving the compact scene a surprising sense of depth.

The painting has a distinctly naïve, folk-art quality, with flattened perspective, simplified architecture and an almost storybook approach to scale and composition. Buildings, trees, fences and figures are individually articulated, lending the work a wonderfully observant and intimate character, as though recalling a familiar place from memory.

The palette is light and sun-filled, dominated by yellows and sandy beige, punctuated by the vivid reds of the traditional houses. Fresh greens, turquoise window frames and a powder-blue sky and water provide lively contrast. The artist’s brushwork is highly textural and wonderfully detailed: short, stippled touches and delicate dabs of colour build the fields, foliage and distant landscape, while finer linear marks define the buildings and figures.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary warm-toned wooden frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
