Harbour & Hillside

A serene mid-century coastal landscape that captures the rhythmic order of a harbour scene rendered through a distinctly modernist lens, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1963.

Clusters of geometric buildings and cranes line the waterfront, their angular forms carefully arranged to evoke both structure and serenity. The distant hills rise gently across the water, balancing the composition with soft undulating lines against the rigid shapes of the port.

The artist has used a palette of muted yet harmonious tones – brick red, sage green, browns, blush, and blue – creating a subdued but richly layered harmony of colour. Each hue appears thoughtfully modulated, suggesting light glancing off the industrial surfaces and calm waters below.

The brushwork is confident and deliberate, with flat, interlocking planes that give the painting an almost architectural rhythm. Despite the simplified forms, there is a deep sense of atmosphere and quietude, as though the bustling port has been momentarily stilled in contemplation.

This oil on canvas is beautifully presented in a linen-lined wooden frame. The painting itself is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some marks as well as some age spots to the linen section, consistent with age.
