A charming mid-century modernist abstract still life oil composition dated 1954, and painted by the established Swedish artist Ture Fabiansson (1910-1994), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, The Museum of Art in Gothenburg, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and many others.
The painting depicts an abundant arrangement of rounded fruits or apples scattered loosely across a warm earthen ground. Rather than presenting the objects in a conventional tabletop arrangement, the artist allows them to overlap and drift across the composition, creating a wonderfully rhythmic pattern of organic forms. Their simplified shapes give the work an almost abstract quality while retaining the warmth and familiarity of a traditional still life.
Painted in a distinctly mid-century modernist manner, the work favours simplification, shape and colour over precise naturalistic detail. The fruits are reduced to broad, softly defined forms, with their overlapping contours creating a playful sense of movement throughout the composition.
The palette is beautifully muted and harmonious, dominated by soft sage, olive and celadon greens alongside warm apricot, ochre and buttery yellow. These gentle tones are set against a dusty terracotta and rose-brown ground, lending the painting an earthy, autumnal warmth. Occasional touches of grey, cream and deeper moss green provide subtle contrast and definition.
The paint has been applied with loose brushwork, with visible strokes following the rounded contours of the fruit. Areas of colour are softly layered rather than heavily modelled, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible beneath the paint. Small flashes of lighter pigment along the edges act as highlights, while broader, slightly dry strokes give the surface a wonderfully tactile, time-worn character.
This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
