A very well painted and engaging canine composition of a fox hound, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

Set against a soft, muted background of rolling green hills and a pale grey-blue sky, the dog stands in profile, tail raised with alertness. Its body is lean and elegant, painted in cream tones with striking black patches, while the head is a warm chestnut brown. A simple blue collar around its neck adds a touch of personality and contrast.

The style is minimalist yet expressive — flat planes of color, clean lines, and little surface detail. This simplicity allows the dog’s form and posture to take center stage, giving it a quiet dignity and a timeless quality. British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
