Cottage by the Sea

A captivating mid-century landscape depicting a secluded coastal settlement, where a solitary cottage sits nestled between rolling hills overlooking a tranquil stretch of water, executed in oil onto board.

The composition evokes a sense of stillness and isolation, with the modest dwelling providing a quiet focal point amid the expansive, rugged terrain.

Executed in a distinctive modernist style, the painting embraces simplified geometric forms, angular contours and a strong sense of structure. The surrounding hills are rendered as overlapping planes of colour, lending the landscape an almost abstract quality, while the dark, expressive outlines create definition and contrast.

The restrained, earthy palette combines muted olive greens, mossy browns, charcoal greys and soft sage tones, beautifully offset by the creamy ivory and pale blue-grey hues of the sky and water. The cottage, painted in warm ochre and beige, introduces a gentle warmth to the otherwise cool, subdued landscape.

Confident, deliberate brushstrokes and richly textured impasto lend the painting a wonderful tactile quality. Broad, directional strokes follow the contours of the hills, while shorter, rhythmic applications of paint animate the sky and water. The visible texture and sculptural handling of paint give the composition a striking sense of depth and character.

This oil on board is housed in a characterful wood frame featuring layered mouldings. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
