Among the Hills

A serene mid-century landscape depicting a cluster of whitewashed houses nestled beneath a sweeping expanse of rolling hills, executed in oil onto board.

Terracotta rooftops form a strong geometric foreground, while the landscape beyond unfolds in broad, overlapping planes, dotted with small, dark trees that give a wonderful sense of rhythm and scale.

The artist takes a distinctly modernist approach, simplifying the countryside into flattened shapes and blocks of colour rather than focusing on fine detail. There is an appealing quietness to the composition, with the angular architecture of the village contrasting beautifully against the softer, undulating contours of the surrounding hills.

The palette is wonderfully muted and earthy, bringing together dusty olive and sage greens, clay reds and soft browns, balanced by chalky whites and a hazy blue-grey sky. The restrained colours give the work a sun-baked, Mediterranean feel.

Brushwork is loose, with broad, visible strokes defining the hills and fields. The rooftops and buildings are more crisply constructed, while small dabs of deep green and charcoal suggest scattered trees across the landscape.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary linen-lined wood frame, finished with a warm gilt outer border and a pale wood inner slip. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
