A mid century limited edition (55/260) coloured lithograph, signed and numbered by the established French abstract artist Jean Deyrolle.
Jean Deyrolle was a famous French abstract painter who belonged to the post-war School of Paris. Deyrolle exhibited extensively in France and internationally where his work received critical acclaim. His works are held in the collections of numerous art museums including Musée d’Art Moderne de Ville de Paris; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris; Brussels; Budapest; Copenhagen; Oslo; Turin; Sao Paolo and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
Jean Deyrolle died in Toulon, France on 30th August 1967, aged 56.
This mid century print is housed behind glass in a very complementary wood frame. There are some very minor scuffs to the frame, and a slight overall age toning (commensurate with age) to the print that adds to the overall appeal of the piece, which is in good condition otherwise.

A beautiful and atmospheric mid century oil portrait , painted onto canvas. An elderly lady sits on a chair on a balcony, with a wicker basket by her feet, quietly knitting away. The artist has used a calm, soft colour palette to create this tranquil picture, and distinct and broad brushstrokes give it depth and texture. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on form, line, shape and colour.
This oil on board is housed in its original cream and silver frame with an inner fabric lined border, which suits this painting perfectly and really brings out its palette. The painting has an area of craquelure to the top right section, but overall the paint layer is stable. Cracks forming within the paint layer is natural as the paint starts to age. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. Overall it is in good condition. There is a small loss to the upper left corner of the frame (as shown in photos) but again this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the painting.

We can just about make out a group of houses or sheds with a garden in front of it, but this view has been reduced and flattened down into abstract blocks of colour. Rather than painting the view before him in realistic detail, the artist has chosen to focus instead on the formal qualities of the landscape, such as colour, line, shape, form and pattern. With expressive brushwork, the artist has skilfully used colour theory and has applied a myriad of colours that contrast but harmonise at the same time.

A really striking abstract modernist composition in oil, painted in 1995.
The artist has used broad, expressive and gestural brushwork to depict this composition, using a colour palette that captures the very essence of the cold icy landscape of winter. There is a palpable sense of movement and rhythm within the work – we can imagine the artist’s hand working back and forth, creating a myriad of marks and strokes on the paper. The colours used are also fascinating to explore – as we look closely at the work, a multitude of colours that appear through the layers of paint begin to show themselves.
This oil is protected behind glass and as such, getting close up photos of the textures and depth proved tricky. The painting has wonderful areas of impasto (where the paint is applied so thickly that it stands proud from the surface), and a whole range of textural details.

Featuring a wine bottle on a table top, the artist has flattened all the elements and has reconstructed this painting in an abstract manner through the use of distinct blocks of warm earthy colours as well as expressive brushstrokes.

A very pleasing and well executed mid century river & city scape composition, painted in oil onto canvas.
The painting has a beautifully gentle feel to it – the artist has used mostly soft colours in a pastel palette, with the exception of darker colours for the wood structures within the scene. The artist has successfully conveyed the softness of fresh snow that has covered the landscape. The cityscape of Stockholm under a pastel sky lines the back of the composition, while in the foreground we see a boat docked on the river Söderström. In the foreground, the artist has used richer, darker colours contrasted with the white snow to give our eyes a focus, and then lightening as we move further back into the composition. The movement of the brushwork is also interesting to notice, with areas of more distinct horizontal and vertical strokes contrasting against other areas with shorter, swifter strokes.
