  • Yellow & Green Ball

    Yellow & Green Ball

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 on the reverse by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist uses a restrained palette – the picture is almost monochrome, except for the green and yellow circles, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This painting is wonderfully presented in a distressed style frame with ridge detail, and an inner linen-lined border and gilt window. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Figures in Hats

    Figures in Hats

    Sold

    SOLD

A well executed mid century modernist figurative composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

Depicted here are 2 figures, each in hats.  Their facial details have been intentionally left out – the artist has chosen instead to focus on the formal elements of shape, form and colour. There is a cohesive to the palette of the composition, as the background of the painting echoes the colours of the figures’ outfits.  It has been split into 3 horizontal parts, which also seem to match up with the 3 parts of the two figures (hat, head, torso).

The movement of the artist’s brush is visible in the piece, adding to its painterly character and creating a lovely textural effect. There is a timeless and pensive vibe to the piece.

The painting is housed in a painted wood frame. There is a very small area of paint loss to the left side of the painting as shown in the photos, but the paint layer is stable overall. The frame has some scuffing present.

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid-century still life in oil, painted by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.

Cederberg is known for his exquisite still lifes of pears, which always capture the delightful quirkiness of this lovely fruit. He focuses on their forms, approaching the fruit and its surroundings with a modernist ethos. Both the background and objects within this picture have been painted in flat planes of colour, creating a blocky composition. There is a beautiful balance to the horizontal composition, which Cederberg is known to be adept at achieving.

Cederberg was a Swedish artist who made his debut on the art world in Helsingborg in 1922.  Later he participated in the  Skåne Art Association Exhibition in 1926 and the  Swedish Public Art Society exhibition in Stockholm in 1941. He is represented in several public collections in Sweden.

    Pipe & Pears

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and characterful mid-century still life in oil, painted by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.

In this excellent composition, an assortment of objects including three pears, a pipe, a pitcher, a lemon, and a book are thoughtfully laid out on a wooden surface.

Working with a rich and saturated colour palette, the objects appear illuminated. They are set against a backdrop of darker shades including blue, red, black, and green that intermingle, creating a visually striking contrast that makes the bowl of pears stand out more.

Working with a rich colour palette comprising shades of green, brown, yellow, and white, the artist has skilfully captured the three-dimensional qualities of the objects and the intricate grain of the wood, whilst simultaneously emphasizing the two-dimensional flatness of the board. The expressive and lightly textured brushstrokes further enrich the visual experience of the piece.

This oil on board is housed in its original mid-century silver frame with an inner linen lining. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has very minor scuffs, and there is light age toning to the linen lined area of the frame as shown in photos. Sold

    SOLD

A captivating mid-century modernist still life composition, executed in oil onto board and dated 1955.

The focal point is a blue pot nestled within a larger bowl, both sitting atop a dark wood brown surface, and set against a cream backdrop.

The style of the painting is typically modernist in ethos, as the artist has deconstructed the scene down to blocks of contrasting colours, to demonstrate a sense of depth and dimension.

The colour palette features muted and subdued shades of brown, blue, and cream. Each hue is carefully selected to complement the overall aesthetic, creating a harmonious balance throughout the piece.

The expressive and textured brushstrokes of the pot and bowl add a dynamic energy to the scene, imbuing the objects with a sense of presence. In contrast, the smoother brushstrokes of the surrounding elements provide a serene backdrop against which the central forms shine.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary painted wood frame. SOLD

An expressive mid-century landscape composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1939.

The painting presents a table setting within dense garden setting surrounded by an expanse of muted green shades. Seated away from the table, a female figure occupying a chair punctuates the center of the composition, her presence is enigmatic as her facial features are omitted.

Expressive brushstrokes have been confidently executed across the canvas, creating a sense of movement and depth within the forested backdrop, and the muted earthy tones imbue the work with a sense of calm.

This oil on canvas is housed in a white-painted ornate frame that adds character to the piece. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has slight wear and paint loss, as shown.

  • Wild Rose

    Wild Rose

    Sold

    SOLD

A characterful mid-century modernist still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

A wild rose placed within a yellow vase takes centre stage in this composition. The pink-purple rose contrasts boldly against a striking blue surface and an earthy brown backdrop.

The artist’s modernist approach is evident in the reduction of forms to distinct, short, and expressive brushstrokes as well as contrasting colours, creating a visually captivating work of art.

The colour gradient technique employed by the artist adds depth and highlights the three-dimensional qualities of the petals and leaves of the rose.

This oil on canvas is housed in a very well suited wood frame with an inner gilt window and an inner linen border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition .
