A very unique original artwork by contemporary British artist Dave Boyd, which has been constructed from discarded books (repurposed cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards), and mounted on a wooden panel in a solid wood float frame.

At the centre rests a compact grid of sixteen coloured squares, arranged with quiet precision like a carefully balanced colour study. Deep crimson, burgundy, dusty rose, coral, warm brown, charcoal, soft ivory, and blush tones are thoughtfully interwoven, creating a rhythmic interplay of warm hues and subtle tonal contrasts. The symmetrical arrangement lends the work a sense of order, while the varied textures within each square preserve its handmade character.

The surrounding reclaimed materials lend the work remarkable depth and character, as it provides a tactile counterpoint to the crisp geometry of the coloured grids. The generous negative space lends the work a sense of calm, while the contrast between the orderly geometry and the organic imperfections of the reclaimed surface creates a quiet yet compelling tension.

Dave’s artistic practice focuses on the juxtaposition between the manmade and the natural and the human experience of geometric forms, surfaces and materials. Paintings and collages often embody a built or constructed aesthetic and are strongly influenced by architecture and the built environment, with the aim of suggesting visual encounters with structures and landscapes. Utilising and repurposing materials,  with a focus on minimal composition, surface and colour, Dave’s work seek to utilise the subtle marks inherent in objects that have been used and handled over many years.

At the centre sits a small vertical grid of coloured squares, arranged in a neat, almost architectural column. Each block (muted red, ochre, green, teal, grey, and off-white) carefully chosen, like a restrained palette study. Its symmetry contrasts with the more irregular, weathered background.

The surrounding field is a rich, earthy expanse, layered with horizontal marks, striations, and subtle tonal shifts. There’s a tension between precision (the grid) and imperfection (the background).

Colour, material, and space are reduced to essentials. It invites slow looking, rewarding attention with subtle shifts in tone and texture rather than bold statements.

The artwork is presented in wood frame that suits it very well. It has been constructed with professional grade adhesive and is shipped with robust fixings, ready to hang. Both artwork and frame are in excellent condition.
