The Blue Pot

A charming mid-century still life depicting an intimate arrangement of everyday objects, brought to life through expressive brushwork and a beautifully harmonious palette, and executed in oil onto board.
A creamy ivory jug takes centre stage in the foreground, accompanied by a striking cobalt blue ceramic pot holding a leafy green plant. To the right, a small lemon rests upon a pale ceramic plate, completing this thoughtfully balanced composition.
Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the artist favours simplified forms, loose outlines and expressive, painterly textures over precise realism. Broad, confident brushstrokes and richly layered applications of paint lend the composition a wonderful sense of movement and spontaneity. The interplay of cool blues, sage greens and soft greys is beautifully offset by warm terracotta browns, buttery yellows and creamy whites. Particularly captivating is the treatment of light and shadow, with subtle shifts in tone giving the objects depth while retaining the painting’s wonderfully relaxed, almost abstract quality.
This oil on board is presented in a richly moulded gilt frame with a warm linen mount and delicate inner white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
