The Morning’s Catch

A wonderfully characterful mid-century oil on canvas, dated 1953, depicting three fishermen at work beside their boats.

Painted in a beautifully restrained palette of earthy browns, slate blues, soft greys and muted creams, the composition captures a quiet moment of everyday life along the waterfront. The three figures, dressed in heavy coats and caps, are huddled together as they tend to their catch, surrounded by fishing nets and moored boats.

There’s something particularly appealing about the artist’s simplified, almost geometric treatment of the figures. Their rounded shoulders and angular clothing give the painting a distinctly modernist quality, while the loose, confident brushwork adds texture and movement. The fishermen’s faces are barely defined, allowing their gestures and shared activity to tell the story.

We particularly love the sense of camaraderie in this piece. It’s an unassuming scene of ordinary working life, but one that feels full of character and quiet purpose.

Dated 1953 and presented in a beautiful vintage wooden frame with gilt detailing, which complements the painting’s wonderfully muted tones. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There are some small scuff marks to the frame but nothing that detracts from its overall appearance.
