Emerald Valley

The composition unfolds across several layers, with dense clusters of trees framing the foreground, gently rolling green hills and wooded shorelines in the middle distance, and distant blue-grey mountains stretching beneath an expansive, cloud-filled sky.

Painted in a distinctly modernist style with expressive, confident brushwork, the artist simplifies the natural landscape into bold, loosely defined forms and harmonious blocks of colour. A rich palette of forest greens, olive, moss and vibrant yellow-green contrasts beautifully with the soft blue and silvery-grey tones of the water. Above, broad, gestural strokes of pale cream, dusty pink and muted blue lend movement and atmosphere to the dramatic sky.

The brushwork is wonderfully spontaneous and assured, with thick, angular strokes defining the trees and foliage, while softer, sweeping applications of paint capture the gentle contours of the hills and reflective surface of the lake. Subtle touches of warm yellow and peach along the shoreline introduce a beautiful sense of light and depth.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary wide light-toned wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has areas of scuffs.
