Finding Your Way

A striking and intricately composed artwork, executed in oil and collage on wood panel in 2019.

The composition depicts a fascinating accumulation of books, stacked, scattered and layered in an elaborate, almost gravity-defying arrangement. Viewed from multiple perspectives, the books overlap and intersect, creating a dynamic interplay of geometric shapes, angles and planes. At the heart of the composition, an upright book introduces a sense of structure amid the apparent chaos.

The artist transforms an everyday subject into a captivating exploration of form, space and perspective. The incorporation of collage adds further visual complexity, with fragments of printed text, patterned papers and textured surfaces subtly referencing the literary subject matter.

The rich and sophisticated colour palette combines earthy browns, charcoal greys and muted greens with vibrant accents of cobalt blue, mustard yellow, turquoise, crimson and burgundy. These carefully distributed bursts of colour lend rhythm and energy to the composition.

The brushwork is meticulous and controlled, with finely rendered textures, delicate linear detailing and subtle tonal variations that lend depth and dimension to the individual books. Contrasting areas of smooth colour and richly textured surfaces enhance the work’s tactile, layered quality.

Both intellectually engaging and visually compelling, this distinctive work celebrates the beauty of books, transforming familiar objects into an extraordinary abstract composition.

This oil and collage is executed on wood panel, and comes unframed and ready to hang. The painting is in very good condition.
