Lavender Skies

An uplifting and expressive mid-century landscape painted with a refreshing simplicity and a distinctly modernist sensibility, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1954.

A winding peach-toned road leads the eye through open fields towards a cluster of dark farm buildings and trees, their simplified forms sitting beneath an expansive lavender-grey sky. The landscape has been reduced to its essential elements, giving the scene an almost abstract quality while retaining a strong sense of place and perspective.

The artist works with a beautifully unexpected palette. Soft pistachio and sage greens sweep across the foreground, meeting areas of burnt orange and golden yellow, while the warm blush of the road provides a gentle route through the composition. These lighter tones are anchored by deep forest greens, charcoal black and touches of russet around the distant buildings. Above, the broad lilac-grey sky lends the painting its particularly distinctive atmosphere.

Brushwork is loose, broad and wonderfully visible throughout. Areas of paint have been applied in confident, overlapping strokes, with sections of the underlying ground deliberately left exposed. Rather than describing every detail, the artist uses blocks and sweeps of colour to suggest fields, trees and architecture, creating a landscape that feels spontaneous and immediate. The slightly rough edges and changing directions of the brushstrokes add movement and a lovely painterly energy.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary linen-lined frame with a dark wood outer and inner border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
