The Artist’s Room

A brilliantly executed and richly textured modernist interior scene oil composition, painted by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, and the Landskrona Konsthall.

This striking compositions depicts an artist’s studio or creative workspace, rendered with a compelling sense of structure and stillness. The composition centres on an easel positioned before a window, through which a tightly framed view of neighbouring rooftops and chimneys can be glimpsed. Sparse furnishings and dark, geometric forms punctuate the room, giving the otherwise familiar interior an intriguing, almost abstract quality.

The work has a distinctly modernist sensibility, reducing the room and its contents to simplified planes, strong outlines and block-like shapes. Perspective is deliberately flattened and slightly skewed, creating a tension between representation and abstraction. The architectural geometry of the window, walls and furniture provides a strong framework, while the solitary studio setting lends the painting a wonderfully contemplative atmosphere.

The palette is restrained and beautifully muted, dominated by chalky cream, soft sage and blue-grey, offset by deep charcoal, black and earthy brown. Small touches of ochre, terracotta and warm beige soften the cooler tones and draw the eye towards the view beyond the window.

Paint has been applied with visible, textured brushwork, particularly across the broad areas of wall and ceiling. Short, directional strokes animate the otherwise flat planes, while heavier dark lines define the furniture and architectural elements. This combination of tactile surface, simplified form and subdued colour gives the painting a wonderfully characteristic mid-century presence.

This oil on canvas is housed in a characterful linen-lined wood frame with an inner wood and gilt border. The painting has some areas of craquelure, but the paint layer remains stable, and the work is in good overall condition. The frame has some scuffs consistent with age.
