Beyond the White Road

An atmospheric mid-century landscape that depicts a quiet settlement gathered along a broad country road, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1964.

A scattering of simple whitewashed buildings stretches across the horizon, their angular silhouettes emerging beneath an expansive blue-grey sky. The sweeping road dominates the foreground, drawing the eye gently into the composition and towards the cluster of houses beyond. Sparse surrounding fields and the absence of figures give the scene a wonderfully still, almost timeless quality.

The work is painted in a distinctly modernist, semi-abstract style, with the landscape reduced to broad planes, simplified architectural forms and loosely defined contours. Rather than focusing on precise detail, the artist captures the essential shapes and atmosphere of the setting. The buildings are constructed from irregular blocks of paint, while passages of shadow and dark openings provide a striking graphic contrast against their pale facades.

The restrained palette is particularly appealing, combining chalky whites, warm creams and stone greys with muted olive and earthy brown. A soft blue-grey sky lends a coolness to the composition, balanced beautifully by the warmer tones of the surrounding land. Small accents of charcoal and near-black punctuate the otherwise subdued palette, lending depth and definition to the buildings and landscape.

Brushwork is loose, expressive and richly textural, with broad, dry strokes and areas of thicker impasto giving the surface a tactile quality. The road is rendered through long, sweeping strokes that reinforce its perspective, while shorter, more vigorous marks articulate the buildings and rough terrain. Areas of the underlying surface are allowed to interact with the paint, contributing to the work’s raw, understated character.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary lined-lined wood frame with a slender gilt inner border. The painting presents well overall. There are small minor dents to the outer edge of the frame. A line of craquelure runs down the centre of the painting, corresponding with the underlying stretcher framework; however, the paint remains stable.
