Where the Street Bends

A mid-century modernist painting that captures the charm of a winding street, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1968.

The composition leads the viewer around a gentle curve, framed by a procession of closely gathered buildings whose simplified forms and overlapping rooftops create a rhythmic architectural landscape. Rather than focusing on activity or figures, the painting celebrates the character of the built environment itself, transforming an everyday streetscape into a carefully balanced study of shape, colour and light.

Executed in a restrained modernist style, the artist reduces the architecture to clean geometric planes and broad areas of flat colour. Perspective is gently compressed, allowing the facades and rooftops to stack together in harmonious layers that emphasise composition over strict realism. The resulting scene possesses a calm, contemplative quality, where atmosphere is conveyed through thoughtful simplification rather than intricate detail.

The colour palette is warm yet refined, combining terracotta reds, burnt orange, yellow and muted sage greens with cool blue-grey rooftops, soft taupes and a pale, luminous sky.
