Autumn Valley

An expressive and atmospheric mid-century landscape that captures a countryside at the height of the changing season, executed in oil onto canvas.

Rolling fields unfold across the foreground, where a solitary red-roofed cottage rests amidst sweeping green meadows, lending a sense of scale to the expansive vista. Beyond, a vibrant belt of autumn foliage stretches across the valley floor, its fiery hues glowing against the darker wooded ridges and distant hills that frame the horizon.

Painted in a distinctly modernist manner, the artist distils the landscape into broad, simplified forms and expressive passages of colour, prioritising mood and rhythm over strict realism. The composition is carefully balanced, with horizontal bands of field, forest, and sky creating a sense of harmony and depth, while the undulating contours of the land gently guide the viewer’s eye through the scene.

The palette is both rich and nuanced, combining warm oranges, burnt siennas and soft crimsons with cool passages of sage green, blue-grey, lavender, and pale turquoise. Above, an expansive sky is animated by layered clouds rendered in sweeping strokes of blues and white, suggesting shifting light and the onset of changing weather.

The brushwork is confident and expressive throughout.
