Garden Celebration

A charming modernist figurative landscape painting that captures a leisurely outdoor gathering rendered abstractly with an almost dreamlike simplicity, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1971.

Small groups of figures drift through a soft green parkland, framed by loosely painted trees and two tables dressed in pale cloths, each topped with delicately decorated cakes. The scene feels both celebratory and intimate – a fleeting social moment distilled into colour, gesture, and atmosphere.

Executed in a naïve modernist style, the composition embraces spontaneity and abstraction over fine detail. The figures are reduced to simplified silhouettes and expressive blocks of colour, allowing the painting’s mood and rhythm to take precedence. Thick, textural brushstrokes give the work a tactile quality, with heavily layered whites and soft blush pinks contrasting beautifully against lively greens, deep blacks, and accents of crimson, violet, and sky blue.
