A charming contemporary naïve style painting, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The composition presents a tiger in profile, captured mid-step as it moves across a simplified landscape. Set against a soft grey sky and grounded by a muted green foreground, the figure carries a quiet sense of motion and watchful presence.

Rendered in a contemporary naïve style, the work embraces flat perspective and bold simplification. The tiger is defined by clean outlines and gently exaggerated proportions, with depth suggested through simple bands of colour, enhancing its graphic clarity and narrative charm.

The palette is warm and balanced. Rich burnt orange tones are interspersed with bold black stripes, complemented by soft cream underparts. These tones sit harmoniously against the cool grey background and green foreground, creating a pleasing contrast.

Brushwork is smooth and controlled, with flat, even application that emphasises form and pattern over texture. The overall finish is clean and deliberate, capturing the charm of the naïve aesthetic with a calm, confident presence.

This oil on board is housed in a wood frame painted black with an inner gilt window. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
