Afternoon Light

A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist interior scene, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1958.

The painting presents a richly textured view of a domestic space segmented by walls and doorways, evoking a sense of both intimacy and distance, The composition leads the eye through a series of adjoining rooms, each anchored by angular furniture and luminous windows that suggest late afternoon light filtering in.

Rendered in bold, sculptural impasto, the brushwork is confident and geometric, with thick strokes that emphasise form over fine detail. The artist has used a sophisticated, somewhat muted palette of teal, orange, dusty rose, blues, offset by accents of coral red and pale lavender. The use of repeated rectangular forms – windows, tabletops, and chairs –  imbues the painting with a rhythmic architectural quality.

Stylistically, the painting straddles between abstraction and realism, with the recognisable elements of the interior flattened into colour blocks and strong contours, echoing the influences of both post-cubist and modern design aesthetics.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame with silver and red tones.. Both the painting and frame are is in excellent vintage condition.
