Woodland Rhythm

A dynamic mid-century artwork that can be read as an abstracted woodland scene, where slender tree trunks and clustered canopies are distilled into rhythmic, angular forms, executed in oil onto board and dated 1955.

The vertical lines suggest trunks or branches, while the overlapping triangular and faceted shapes evoke dense foliage catching light at different angles. Rather than a literal forest, it feels like a memory or impression of one – fragmented, layered, and alive with quiet movement.

The style leans into geometric abstraction with strong cubist influence, where natural forms are broken down into interlocking planes. The composition feels almost musical in its repetition – trees rising and overlapping, creating a sense of depth without traditional perspective. There’s a balance between structure and spontaneity, as the eye moves through the clustered forms like walking through a stylised grove.

The palette is rich yet earthy: dominated by browns, mustard yellows, olive greens, and warm rust tones that suggest autumnal foliage or filtered forest light. Darker browns and charcoal lines anchor the composition, acting as trunks or branches that give structure to the scene.

Brushwork remains controlled and deliberate, with paint applied in flat, confident planes that emphasise form over texture. Subtle variations in tone and the visible weave of the canvas add warmth and tactility, reinforcing the painting’s grounded, organic feel despite its abstraction.

This oil on board is housed complementary layered wooden frame with pronounced grain, as well as a cream-toned inner border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
