An intriguing and enigmatic semi-abstract figurative oil, painted onto canvas and dated 1948 by the established Swedish artist Rune Janson (1918-2004), who’s artworks have been displayed at the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum and other museums in Sweden and the National Gallery in Oslo and the Centre Georges Pompidou Paris.

A solitary woman is depicted seated in profile beside what appears to be a window. Her form is pared back into simple blocks of colour and loosely drawn lines, with the artist giving us very little detail, yet somehow enough to suggest an entire moment. She might be sitting, waiting, thinking, or simply watching the world beyond the glass.

The composition has a distinctly modernist quality, with the figure reduced to softly geometric shapes and expressive passages of colour rather than carefully rendered detail. Her elongated pink face and dark charcoal dress are punctuated by a powder-blue collar and deep navy cuff.

Powder blue and pale green create a soft, almost dreamlike setting, while touches of mustard, pink and deep teal bring warmth and structure to the composition. The restrained palette lends the work a wonderfully gentle, contemplative atmosphere.

Brushstrokes remain loose and visible throughout, with areas of thinly applied paint allowing the texture of the canvas to show through. Broad, gestural marks sit alongside more deliberate outlines, giving the painting an appealing sense of spontaneity and freedom.

This oil on canvas is wonderfully presented in a simple but effective wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
