Village Courtyard

A mid-century painting that captures the quiet charm of a rustic village scene, executed painted in oil onto canvas.

A cluster of brown and cream houses with sloping, dark roofs are nestle into the landscape, their forms framed by a lush green hillside under a muted blue sky. In the courtyard, a lone figure in a deep blue dress stands near a building, while a line of laundry – vivid in red, blue, and white, sways gently between posts. A slender tree with textured, leafy strokes adds rhythm and movement to the composition, while a burst of orange flowers brightens the earthy tones.

Executed in a modernist style, the work uses simplified, almost blocky architectural forms, contrasting with the more expressive handling of foliage and sky. The palette blends warm ochres, terracottas, and earthy browns with cool greens and blues, creating a balanced, atmospheric harmony. Brushstrokes are confident and varied – broad and textured for buildings and ground, more gestural and layered in the tree and sky –  giving the piece a tactile, painterly quality that evokes both structure and spontaneity.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame that has a warm, earthy golden-brown finish that complements the painting’s rustic palette. The painting is in good vintage condition. The frame has some light marks but is in good condition overall.
