Town of Cadaqués

A mid-century modernist painting that presents a strikingly abstracted view of the coastal town of Cadaqués in Spain, executed in oil onto board and dated 1956.

The artist has distilled the clustered houses into bold, geometric blocks, evoking the distinctive terracotta and ochre rooftops set against pale walls. The composition has layered these forms across the surface in rhythmic harmony, suggesting the tight-knit hillside architecture that characterises Mediterranean villages.

Executed in a restrained palette of earthy ochres, muted greys, soft whites, and warm clay tones, the work captures both the warmth of sunlit surfaces and the cool shadows of narrow streets. The brushstrokes are broad, textured, and deliberate, leaving visible traces of the painter’s hand and imbuing the scene with a raw, tactile energy.

The overall effect is both architectural and atmospheric, blending abstraction with place-specific memory. The painting overall  has a focus on simplification, harmony of form and colour, as well as on structural essence rather than detail.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some marks.
