A striking mid-century abstract composition painted in oil onto canvas, by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

This abstract composition evokes a coastal or industrial landscape through a series of bold geometric forms and a restrained, earthen palette. The composition is anchored by a solid horizontal band of deep olive and brown, suggesting a distant shoreline or structure, while above it, angular bursts of cobalt blue, lemon yellow, and white hint at rooftops or sails catching the light. The lower half is dominated by cool, muted greens and greys, with subtle layering and visible palette knife marks that add a tactile quality.

The painting features a mix of smooth and textured brushstrokes, with areas of impasto lending weight and structure. The deliberate abstraction flattens perspective, creating a sense of quiet tension between land, form, and space.

This oil on canvas is presented in a beautifully suited gilt frame with an inner linen border and gilt window. There is some craquelure present mainly on the top section of the painting, but the paint layer is stable overall and this does not detract from the overall composition. The frame is in very good vintage condition.
