A brilliantly executed mid-century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The painting depicts a pair of nuns, standing side by side, looking austere. The minimal colour palette emphasises this austerity, encouraging us viewers to focus on the angular shape and form of their habits.  Their pectoral cross acts as a focal point, leading our eyes upwards to their faces and veil, and then to the background behind. The contrast of their black habits against the brown background is beautifully stark, creating a very captivating image.

The artist’s brushstrokes are gentle, soft and precise, reflecting a careful attention to detail and a desire to capture the quiet beauty of the moment.  The layout of flat shapes and planes are typical of Lundqvist’s style.

This oil on canvas is is housed in a well-suited beige frame with a linen lining and an inner silver border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
