The Heart of Town

A wonderfully vibrant street scene dated 1977, depicting a bustling town square alive with figures, market stalls and architectural detail, by the established Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

The composition captures the cheerful rhythm of everyday urban life. Groups of loosely rendered figures wander across the foreground, while striped market awnings and a row of tall trees lead the eye towards the warm facades and distinctive red rooftops beyond. To the right, a tower rises above the scene, giving the painting a strong sense of place and structure.

Painted in a naïve modernist style with expressionist qualities, the artist favours spontaneity and character over strict perspective or realism. Buildings, trees and figures are simplified into playful, almost illustrative forms, outlined with energetic dark marks. There is a wonderful sense of movement throughout, with the irregular proportions and lively arrangement of figures lending the scene an appealing folk-art quality.

The colour palette is especially joyful, dominated by sunny yellow, greens, and strong flashes of red. Pale blue across the foreground provides a cooler counterpoint, while the bright yellow sky bathes the entire scene in warmth. The artist has used colour boldly and instinctively, giving the work a distinctly optimistic character.

Brushwork is loose, gestural and deliberately expressive, with visible strokes and areas of roughly applied pigment adding texture and immediacy. Fine black lines are layered over the broader passages of colour to articulate figures, architecture and foliage, creating a lively contrast between painterly surfaces and graphic mark-making.

This oil on canvas is presented in a charming hand-painted wooden frame, decorated with repeating geometric motifs in coordinating red, green and blue. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and there are some marks to the inner frame.
